A few weeks ago Geeta, the deaf and mute girl who was stranded in Pakistan for more than 10 years, made headlines when she returned to India.
Her story is similar to that of Pakistani girl Munni from the Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan who accidentally wanders into the Indian territory. The efforts for Geeta’s return to India were spearheaded by people from both countries and though she failed to recognise the family that claimed to be hers, Geeta is now in good company at the Indore Deaf Bilingual Academy.

The academy that houses deaf-mute girls has helped Geeta open up about herself and has also acquainted her with Indian traditions that she missed out on after wandering into the neighbouring country at the tender age of 11. An ardent fan of Salman Khan, Geeta shared her feelings about homecoming and celebrating Diwali, with Indore Times through her caretaker and interpreter Monika Punjabi Verma. Geeta vaguely recalls instances from Diwali celebrations before she wandered into Pakistan. She shared, “My parents used to buy a lehnga-choli and dupatta for me from a shop in our village and I used to be very excited about wearing the same. I also remember that my mother used to prepare some sweets, rice and matar-aloo sabzi on a chulha. Another thing I recall is lighting anar and chakris and eating laddoos.”

When asked if she celebrated the festival of lights in Pakistan, Geeta said, “There was no one to celebrate Diwali with me there but we used to celebrate Holi sometimes. This was my first Diwali celebration in years and I simply loved it.” The girl relived her Diwali memories this time as she lit chakris and anars,
tasted a wide range of sweets and even got new clothes for the festival. “I love colourful crackers and made sure to light them. I even enjoyed making a rangoli apart from indulging in sweets. In Pakistan I used to only eat Karachi dodha but here I tried a wide range of sweets and loved jalebi the most,” shared Geeta, whose likes in food include achaar, dosa and parmal (puffed rice). “I used to have parmal with tea or milk with my family regularly but had lost on the habit,” she informed.

At the academy, Geeta spends most of her time watching shows and films of Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachchan on TV. She shared, “I want to meet Salman Khan and hope that he helps me find my parents like he did for Munni in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. I have even brought gifts for him from Pakistan and will give them to him when we meet.” She has kept a special suit aside for the occasion and believes that it was because of Salman’s movie that she is back to India. “I wear a locket similar to the one Salman sported in the film. I really want him to visit our academy here and meet everyone,” she informed. India for Geeta is all about big cities, beautiful surroundings and most importantly, freedom. “Girls in India have more freedom than they do in Pakistan,” she shared.
